The Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) invites early-career researchers from across the EUNICoast Alliance to a doctoral workshop dedicated to island and maritime studies from the perspectives of the humanities and social sciences.
Framed within UIB's internationalisation project for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the workshop brings together final-year undergraduate, Master's and doctoral students to present research in progress and discuss the analytical frameworks, theoretical debates and methodological challenges specific to island and maritime contexts.
The two-day programme opens with a keynote seminar from the Ocean Crime Narratives project, "Apocalyptic Authoritarianism: Climate Crisis, Media, and Power", delivered online by Dr Hanna E. Morris (University of Toronto), followed by eight thematic sessions covering language and linguistic variation, maritime and insular narratives, tourism and environmental damage, historiographical sources, political mobilisation, and cultural projections of islands and coastal destinations. Each presentation runs 10-15 minutes and is followed by a discussion with an invited specialist respondent. Outcomes from the workshop will feed into the forthcoming Guide for Research in Island and Maritime Studies.
