The EUNICoast alliance - The European University of Islands, Ports and Coastal Territories (www.eunicoast.eu), organized its 1st online conference on 27 September 2024.  

With a two-fold aim, the conference introduced the EUNICoast Alliance to the public and proposed a set of selected talks in the five thematic domains covered by EUNICoast Alliance:  

  1. Identities, Local Knowledge, and Cultural Heritage in Islands & Coastal Communities. 
  2. Governance, Planning, Management, and Monitoring of Islands and Coastal Communities. 
  3. Health, Biodiversity Protection, Nature-based Solutions, and Sustainable Exploration of Coastal/Marine Resources. 
  4. Health, Biodiversity Protection, Nature-based Solutions, and Sustainable Exploration of Coastal/Marine Resources. 
  5. Engineered and Data-driven Solutions for Coastal Infrastructures, Marine Renewable Energy, Marine Safety, and Navigation Systems. 

Overall, about 80 contributions, proposed by the 13 member universities of the alliance, were presented in a 7 parallel tracks organization. The e-conference was attended by 378 registered participants, including more than 40 participants from outside the Alliance.

Bringing together 13 European Higher Education institutions located in sea ports and islands, the EUNICoast European University Alliance seeks to create meaningful connections between maritime territories and communities, and empower students to engage purposefully with them and better respond to pertinent societal and environmental challenges.  

Funded by the European Commission with over 14 million Euro, the project will officially start on 07th November 2024, envisaging manifold activities over a span of 4 years (2024-2028).
